WHAT IS POTHOLE?
Pothole is a depression or hollow in a road surface caused by wear or subsidence.

WHAT CAUSES POTHOLE?

Rain seeps through cracks in the pavement and into the sub-base; which eventually become saturated and soft.

Trapped moisture due to repeated dry and raining period cycles worsen the expanding lifts and cracks the pavement more.

As temperatures rise, a void is left under the pavement and collects more water.

Vehicles driving over the weakend pavement pound it until the surface breaks and collapses into the void below, thus creating a pothole.
EFFECTS OF POTHOLES ON ROAD USERS

Tire blowouts and wheel damage
Exhaust system misalignment

Internal injuries and impact pain
HOW MIGHT WE DETECT POTHOLES?

Pothole Detection System
A pothole detection system collects road images through a developed optical device mounted on a vehicle and detects a pothole from the collected data using the proposed algorithm which is then sent to a center.

Sensors in Smartphones
The sensors in smartphone is able to understand and classify road quality which help to crowdsource data on public road experience and inform civic authorities about real-time road conditions.
HOW POTHOLES ARE FIXED?

Temporary Repairs Patching
Quick repair of potholes by filling the asphalt pavement.
Preventive Repairs
- a) Crack Treatments
Special material insertion into the existing cracks to prevent water and incompressible intrusion into the cracks and underlying pavement layers. - b) Microsurfacing
A thin surface treatment that combines a layer of asphalt emulsion and finely crushed stone.
